Plant propagators struggle with new ToBRFV-resistant tomato varieties

ToBRFV-resistant tomato varieties are in full swing. This also means that propagators have more and more such varieties on their concrete floors. But how do you propagate these new varieties in an optimal way if hardly any information is available? Hans van Herk of Propagation Solutions asks that question on LinkedIn.

In the video growth differences are shown in a trial at propagator Roelands Plant in Canada and calls on seed companies to share all their knowledge, as propagators lack knowledge because of the novelty of the varieties. "Sometimes 3-4 people Google to find out what kind of tomato it is... but can't find anything," the crop consultant typifies the situation.

He notes that it is important for growers to know what type of tomato (cherry, cocktail, vine, beef) they are dealing with, for example, to determine how to pinch (cotyledons or 2nd/3rd leaves). Furthermore, it is important to know what type of tomato it is so that it can be determined whether leaves also need to be taken away. "On the video, it is clear that this creates big differences in terms of plant type!"
