On February 18 and 19, 2023, specialists from the Department of Phytosanitary Research of the Amur Reference Center of Rosselkhoznadzor identified a dangerous pathogen, the tomato brown rugose virus, on two lots of cherry tomatoes received from China, the total volume of which was more than 1200 tons.
In particular, the following symptoms were observed in infected batches: chlorosis, deformation, blistering, brown spots, marbling, wrinkling, and uneven fruit ripening.
A virological examination was carried out to confirm the presence of the virus by a molecular diagnostic method.
For reference, the currently confirmed hosts are tomatoes and peppers. These vegetable crops in the Russian Federation are cultivated both in the open and closed ground. The penetration of the virus into the country can lead to significant crop losses, damage to the roots and stems, growth retardation, and death.
Based on the results of the examination, a conclusion was issued on the phytosanitary state of regulated products. Information about the detection of a quarantine object was transferred to the territorial department of Rosselkhoznadzor.
