VBT figures Week 1

Middle price of vine tomato climbs at start 2023

At the end of last year, the rise in tomato prices was still somewhat meager, but Week 1 saw a serious plus on top of the average price for vine tomatoes on the VBT clocks. The kilo price thus exceeded that for loose tomatoes. That was the other way around for a while.

The average price per kilo for vine tomatoes in Week 1 was rounded up to 1.41 euros per kilo. This leaves the price behind the average price for the same week in 2022 (EUR 1.97). However, the price is higher than the average price in 2020 and 2021 (EUR 1.21).

The average price for loose tomatoes dropped to a rounded 1.30 euros. In previous years, the average price for loose tomatoes in Week 1 was 1.81 euros (2021) and 1.64 euros (2020).

In the VBT's price chart, we further encounter radishes (a bunch cost over 42 euro cents on average in Week 1) and heads of lettuce (45.5 euro cents each), as well as a range of other lettuce varieties. Here, it differs by variety whether there is an increase or decrease in price compared to the last week of 2022. Lollo Rossa from the greenhouse was by far the best paid at almost 83 euro cents a head.

The average price for strawberries dipped seriously for Elsanta, while the average price was slightly up across the board. A kilo of Elsanta dropped from 8.47 euros per kilo to 6.24 euros in Week 1. The average price across the board rises from 5.63 euros to a rounded 6 euros.
