At Royal Berry, the harvest of Sonata from the earliest planting has started. This is a strawberry crop from exposed cultivation under full LED lighting. Jan van Genderen is very pleased with the production. "These are the Rolls Royce among strawberries at the moment. They don't get any better than this."
The strawberries from under LED lighting have a "super Brix flavor" and a good shelf life, according to the grower. The grower handles packaging himself. "All packaging is possible," he says. The product is also still available for day trade at the grower, who had a new greenhouse built this year.
The new greenhouse has 6.5 hectares unexposed and 5.5 hectares exposed. The exposed greenhouse has full LED lighting that is dimmable. "Last winter, we gained experience with this in an existing greenhouse equipped with LED," Jan told us this autumn.
Production from the other greenhouse will follow in three weeks. The exposed crop has been planted in two sections. The crop that has now gone into production should give fresh strawberries until mid-January. "With this, we are also going to try to fill in part of the gap that may start to fall because growers who started planting earlier will run out of production earlier." The other half of the crop will continue a little longer. "We want to have a production peak during the holidays and continue production until the end of January."
