Azienda agricola Ortodì dei F.lli Lisi

Tomatoes and turnip tips from Apulia available all over Italy

For over 40 years, Azienda agricola Ortodì dei F.lli Lisi has been producing open-field and protected-crop vegetables, which are then sold loose and in trays to various Italian big retail chains.

"Our leading products are tomatoes, which we grow and commercialize all year round, and turnip tips, which we produce 8 months a year between October and May. We plant many varieties to satisfy consumers and guarantee continuous supplies," explains owner Giuseppe Lisi.

"We started supplying turnip tips to supermarkets all over Italy a few days ago. The produce is typical from Apulia, it is rich in vitamins, mineral salts and iron. It is a poor vegetable that has always been little known but, over the years, its popularity has increased both in Italy and in Europe, so much so that we sell more than 10 tons every season. We grow them on 30 hectares, managed to obtain staggered productions and on soil that is not particularly tired, so as to improve quality."

Ortodì dei F.lli Lisi obtains excellent agronomic, commercial and environmental results when it comes to tomatoes too, which are grown soilless on coir on 4.5 hectares covered and heated by huge biomass boilers. "Cherry tomatoes, yellow plum tomatoes, ribbed tomatoes, Camone and Regina tomatoes are the main varieties, which we commercialize in 3 different grades. The systems are equipped with technological analysis equipment, and solar radiation is also taken into consideration to reduce to a minimum the use of fertilizers and water."

"Our vegetables are harvested and packaged every day, so that they are not placed in cold storage units for multiple days. Our mission is to guarantee the maximum freshness to our clients, as we like to think of them as family."

"We have been registering increases for fertilizers (+400%), fuel (+100%), packaging (+50%), covers (+300%), plants and even on employee remuneration, necessary to make up for the lack of labor. These expenses mean we cannot plan new greenhouses or other investments in general. Luckily we are not affected by gas increases, as our greenhouses are heated with woodchips from the pruning of local woods."
