Vertifarm:

Opportunities and hurdles becoming visible in the market

It's the second day of the Vertifarm exhibition, and colleague Eelkje Pulley has been snapping some pictures of various exhibitors. She mentioned that the atmosphere is very positive and that the exhibition seems to be very attractive for Europeans, whereas sometimes you'd bump into a non-EU citizen.

Conversations on the exhibit floor have been about the potential of vertical farming in the EU, especially in specialty crops. The remarkable thing would be that companies are willing to invest in new hardware and software in this space to keep up to date. In contrast, other sectors that have been around for a while tend to be more reluctant or hesitant toward that.

On the other hand, there are challenges that everyone is very aware of, with one in particular: energy. Many people wonder which farms or companies will last with these cut-throat prices that most certainly will rise even more.

Sustainable Indoor Farming Certification launched

Ramin Ebrahimnejad (AVF) and Henry Earnst (Control Union)

The Sustainable Indoor Farming Certification was launched by the AVF and SIF Certification. Control Union is a partner of the certificate and will do the audits. AVF is the owner of the label and Control Union. "We are able to provide a certification program tailor-made for vertical farming that truly encompasses the production realities of this novel form of agriculture," said Henry Ernst with Control Union.

"It has been an excellent start of VertiFarm, and high-level expert discussions at the 6th AVF summit gives the industry a valuable input for next level development," Christine Zimmermann-Loesl said.
