The first Spanish Intense tomatoes will arrive at PZ Import in the Netherlands today. "The prospects look good. There will be slightly fewer tomatoes from Morocco, and there'll be less lit cultivation in the Netherlands," says Paul Zuiderwijk, "but we're not counting our chickens before they hatch. After all, you only know how the season went once it's over." He supplies the Spanish tomatoes under the Roxy brand and has them available in sizes M, MP, and MM.
PZ Import limits its tomato imports to Spanish Intense plum tomatoes. They are distinctively firm without losing any juiciness or shape, making them ideal for the processing industry. "For sandwiches, you can't find a better tomato. I export these tomatoes to a regular customer in the United Kingdom. The rest goes through exporters."
The foodservice sector was hit particularly hard by last year's lockdowns. Sales, however, continued well, according to the importer. "I get reasonably stable quantities coming in, though that supply does remain enormously weather-dependent. I usually offer the Spanish Intense tomatoes until April," Paul concludes.
