Great demand for geothermal greenhouse tomatoes from Turkey

The tomatoes produced in greenhouses heated with geothermal water in the Turkish district Sandıklı Afyonkarahisar are being sold in many countries, especially Russia, the Netherlands, and Austria. In 25 modern geothermal greenhouses, cluster tomato production continues in summer and winter, even if the air temperature drops to 25 degrees below zero.

Aktürk Greenhouse Operations Manager Hüseyin Aktürk stated that they export 70% of their production: “We export tomatoes to 10 countries. These countries include Russia, Bulgaria, Romania, Austria, and the Netherlands.”

Explaining that greenhouses are heated with geothermal water of 50 to 55 degrees Celsius, Aktürk claimed that they get more efficient results in winter. Noting that demand from abroad is quite good this year, Aktürk said: “Production in other countries has decreased considerably due to the coronavirus. This situation has brought additional benefits to our country. There is a very high demand in European countries. We also send a good quantity of tomatoes to Russia."
