Strawberry cultivation in southern Italy

Marisol strawberries perform well in soilless crops

When you grow 80 thousand soilless plants, you truly get an idea of how a crop reacts. Stefano Agnello's company planted Marisol strawberries five years ago "and will continue doing so for a long time, as results when it comes to yields and quality are extremely satisfactory. What is more, shelf-life is very good, which is very important when it comes to retail sales," commented the owner.

Soilless Marisol and Beauty, Agnello Stefano

Agnello is one of the few growing soilless strawberries in the Ragusa province. In addition to Marisol, this year he also started cultivating Beauty 54. "70% of the produce is sold to the big retail chain, the rest goes to local markets here in Sicily. Prices are good because the high quality of the produce is recognized, which is not something that is easy to achieve, especially with the big retail chain. A few days ago, a consumer who bought my strawberries from the supermarket found my phone number on the packaging and actually called me to compliment me - a small gesture that means a lot to us producers."

Agnello started harvesting Beauty 54 in mid-November and Marisol in early January. Harvesting continues smoothly, also because this technique helps control various parameters and limit the spreading of diseases. "If everything goes as in 2020, harvesting will continue until mid-June."

Marisol by Bramato

In Apulia, Salvatore Bramato grows 10 thousand plants of Marisol. "Harvesting started in late December and will continue until June. I am very pleased with the quality and yield per plant ratio, but it is no surprise, as I've been growing Marisol for years and things have improved year after year."

Marisol by Bramato

Bramato only commercializes the produce on the local markets. "If you manage to obtain produce that is nice to eat and with constant quality, you can obtain good prices, which we have managed so far with Marisol. We have understood how to cultivate it and the variety is responding well."
