Lucien de Wit, LuBa Fresh, the Netherlands:

"No Christmas markets mean fewer Egyptian strawberry sales"

Egyptian strawberries are usually a hot item in the run-up to Christmas. Not this year, says Lucien de Wit of LuBa Fresh in the Netherlands. "Many chocolate-dipped strawberries are sold at Christmas markets. So, these markets are usually this product's most important sales outlet at this time of year. That's entirely not the case now."

"The Egyptian strawberry season started two to three weeks later. Normally the season starts in mid-November; this year it only began in early December. We had good weeks at the start of the season when - partly due to the limited supply - prices were still reasonably high. Now there's sufficient supply and demand is very low."

"We opted to buy fewer of these strawberries. We can easily sell those coming in now but at low prices. Currently, 10x250g punnets are going for €10 to €11,50. That's actually €4 too little for this great product," concludes Lucien.
