Contributing to climate smart agriculture in Egypt

HollandDoor contributes to an Egyptian agricultural program that builds the capacity of government bodies and educational institutions with regard to modern irrigation, water reuse and climate smart practices.

From September 2020 till March 2022, HollandDoor will be collaborating with Aeres University of Applied Sciences (Netherlands), the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation (MALR) and Kafr El-Sheik University as well as two vocational schools. All Egyptian participants receive hands-on, on-site training and coaching by Dutch agriculture and water experts. The program also includes a study tour to the Netherlands. Besides HollandDoor and Aeres University experts, seven Dutch private companies are involved in the capacity building.

The project is built on best practices in the Netherlands in the field of climate-smart agriculture, which are highly relevant and applicable in the Egyptian context. Key topics for the trainings and workshops are:

  • modern irrigation, drainage and sub-irrigation systems;
  • water quality, water reuse and water harvesting;
  • adaptation and mitigation strategies to tackle the impact of prolonged
  • droughts, salinization and extreme weather events;
  • climate-resilient (integrated and circular) farming systems.

Furthermore, the project will take into account market-driven orientations, entrepreneurial skills of farmers and organizational and social aspects of innovative water management.

This project is a so-called ‘Tailor-made Training', funded under the Orange Knowledge Programme, managed by Nuffic, the Dutch organization for internationalization in education.
