Turkish greenhouse construction companies focus on 4 major markets

Turkish greenhouse construction companies are rapidly expanding their operations and they are also building greenhouses in Iran, Iraq, and Turkic countries. Turkish Greenhouse Construction Companies Association (SERKONDER) Chairman Halil Kozan: “The industry has exported 270 million USD so far in the first 7 months of 2020. The export turnover was 350 million USD in the first 7 months of 2019; however, the export volume has declined due to the coronavirus epidemic.

"We have 22 companies in the association that build turnkey greenhouses. There is high demand for greenhouses in Qatar, Dubai, and Kenya in addition to the United States, Canada, and Mexico. In recent years, new markets are emerging also as viable target destinations for greenhouse construction companies. Countries such as Australia, South Korea, and Vietnam are among these target countries.

"Until 2 decades ago, all the greenhouses in our country were built by foreign companies; however, now all glass and plastic greenhouses in Turkey are built by Turkish companies with nearly 100% domestic materials. Our companies have built a certain amount of production know-how in the process.

"Modern greenhouses are reducing the labor costs of growers. In Turkey, there are about 53,000 hectares of greenhouses and only 1,400 hectares of it can be qualified as a modern greenhouse. In a normal greenhouse, a grower receives around 15 to 20 kilograms of tomatoes whereas in a modern greenhouse a grower receives around 60 to 70 kilograms. Thus the greenhouses in Turkey should be transformed into modern greenhouses in order to increase productivity.”
