Standing out on the market is difficult, but there are those who focus on a precise strategy to make themselves noticed.
Bocca di Rosa
This is precisely how L'Orto Srl chose to operate. The Sicilian company focuses on the colors of its products and especially of its tomatoes - just think about Bocca di Rosa beefsteak tomatoes. But the appearance of products is only part of the story.

According to the company, Bocca di Rosa is the "first beefstake tomato that remains always full. It is a very flexible variety that can be grown practically all year round. It has a high resistance to pathogens and reaches productive peaks that remain consistent for long. The annual production (6 ha for two cycles a year) has a volume of around 1000 ton and cultivated areas are increasing. The average wholesale price hovers around €2/kg."
After a few years, the company updated its rage with another beefsteak tomato called Batmen. Fruits are a dark brown color and they are "perfect to satisfy those consumers looking for a slightly more acidic tomato. In this case too, the uniqueness of the product has meant we were able to reach new markets. We currently grow these tomatoes on 2 hectares producing 300 ton a year (two annual cycles)."
An important role in the commercialization of L'Orto products is played by the packaging: polystyrene crates are fully recyclable and, in addition to keeping the products fresh, they are much more hygienic and do not leave residues compared to the traditional packaging solutions.
Recently, L'Orto decided to accept a new challenge when it comes to colored tomatoes. While they do indeed achieve great visibility, it is also true that they have excellent organoleptic qualities and sell only because of their exceptional flavor. According to the company, Supermen tomatoes are "revolutionary" due to their unique color ranging between blue and purple, which gets even deeper with fewer light hours in autumn.
The shape is just as unique, as it is reminiscent of some old varieties. Fruits are large, extremely full and similar to Riccio fiorentino. "Their aroma is their point of strength as it is traditional, like the one that has always characterized Italian production worldwide. The variety is currently grown on one hectare, producing 100 ton in total."
Batmen and Supermen have an annual wholesale price of €3/kg on average, with considerable fluctuations. The company holds the GlobalGAP and GRASP certifications and exports its products to France, Germany and Austria.
