Russia: Vysokovsky are planting winter cucumbers

Associates of Vysokovsky are ready for planting cucumber seedlings in the third block of the greenhouse complex. The vegetables will be growing on an acreage of 1.7 ha. For better productivity, Vysokovsky have chosen the Reformer variety.

“Reformer cucumbers not only allow for high productivity in winter conditions but also have excellent taste. We have tested this variety in our block and it showed perfect results”, tells the manager of the third block of the greenhouse complex, Ms. Alevtina Fedotova.

It has become possible for Vysokovsky to begin winter cucumber production due to the modernization of the energy complex. The new energy complex of 3.3 MWth and contemporary lighting equipment were montaged last year. Due to that, vegetables can be now grown even on gray winter days.

Cucumber seedlings are taking roots in the new beds. All the associates including growers and the chief agronomist monitor the growth process closely.

“Winter growing has its peculiarities. The plants receive additional lighting 16 hours a day and give crops twice as fast. 15 days after they have been planted, we can see the first cucumbers. However, that means that work here is pretty intense. Therefore we employ only the most experienced and responsible associates in winter greenhouses”, mentioned Alevtina.

The first cucumbers should be picked by December 10. The crops in the last month of the year should amount to 67 tons and it will be gradually increasing. In January 2020, they are expecting to collect 170 tons.
