A group of 10 ‘new Dutch people’ from Eritrea, Syria, Turkey, and Kurdistan visited the horticultural greenhouses in the Dutch Bergerden with a lot of enthusiasm. Obviously, not just to look at all the pretty plants that are being cultivated there, but also to see if there are job opportunities there. It quickly became apparent that these new Dutch people did not know how the work in a modern horticultural greenhouse is conducted. Glenn Langelaan and Pim Rikken took their time to explain about their company and their day-to-day activities.
Together with the Employers Service Point in central Gelderland, Greenport Arnhem-Nijmegen organized the working visit to show the horticultural industry. The new Dutch people were able to look around to their heart's content, ask questions and of course, try out the work for themselves. The ‘delegation’ from Kurdistan started with packaging Anthuriums while the Eritreans mainly looked at the filling of the pots and the cutting. It soon became clear who had green thumbs and who had an interest in a different area. During the visit, the first appointments to work a day in the greenhouse to see what its like were made.
In the coming period, Greenport Arnhem-Nijmegen will work with the Employers Service Point to see if there are more possibilities for the ‘new Dutch people’ to work in the horticultural industry. Besides that, on the 19th of November, an information night will be held at the Rabobank in Elst with the theme ‘hands-on in the greenhouse’. On that night, Sjaak van Tak of LTO Glaskracht Nederland will be present to enlighten people about the initiatives of LTO. Employers Service Point Central Gelderland will talk about what they can mean for the horticultural industry.
