Spain sold 1,163.19 million kilos of pepper to the EU during the pepper campaign - between August 1, 2018, and July 31, 2019 - which corresponds to 46.71% of the total, according to data from the Euroestacom statistical service (Icex-Eurostat).
EU Member States imported a total of 2,490.13 million kilos of peppers in the campaign, worth 3,857.32 million euro, which means they paid an average price of 1,549 euro per kilo.
During the analyzed period, there was no alert for pesticides in Spanish peppers sold in the EU, while the peppers imported from Turkey had a total of 56 alerts due to excess pesticides in them.
Spain is the world's largest supplier of pepper for the EU. The 1,163.19 million kilos were sold for 1,762.61 million euro, and had an average price of 1.515 euro per kilo, i.e. 19.07% cheaper than those from the Netherlands.
The Netherlands is the second-biggest supplier of peppers to the European Union, with a volume of 549.28 million kilos worth 1,028.1 million euro and an average price of 1.872 euro per kilo.
The third supplier of pepper to the EU by volume was Morocco, with 197.88 million kilos worth 218.85 million euro at an average price of 1.106 euro per kilo.
It was followed by Turkey with 130.47 million kilos, 154.45 million euro, and an average price of 1.184 euro per kilo.
Germany ranked fifth with a volume of 117.01 million kilos worth 235.71 million euro and an average price of 2.01 euro per kilo in the 2017/2018 campaign.
