Seminar: Plant Empowerment and Data-Driven Growing

On September 19, 2019, during Horti Asia in China, Hoogendoorn and Svensson jointly organize a seminar on Plant Empowerment and Data-Driven Growing. The session will start with an introduction to Data-Driven Growing. Of course, major trends related to data practices in horticulture, such as Big Data and Internet of Things, are being discussed.

Towards an improved and sustainable climate
After the introduction to Data-Driven Growing, Plant Empowerment will be discussed. Plant Empowerment is a new approach to growing crops in greenhouses. It is based on a combination of physical and physiological principles rather than experiences or green fingers. Plant Empowerment aims to optimise growth by supporting the plant in keeping its balances regarding energy, water and assimilates in equilibrium. During the session, the seminar leaders will provide those present with easy-to-understand tips and tools to implement in their greenhouse.

The seminar will start with an explanation on how to improve yields in your vegetable greenhouse by the use of screens. This knowledge will then be combined with knowledge on greenhouse automation and Plant Empowerment, working towards an improved and sustainable greenhouse climate. Connected Screening, which combines all of these aspects in one software program, will be extensively discussed.

Controlling your climate by connecting knowledge
The Connected Screening software is a technology and knowledge cross-over between Svensson and Hoogendoorn. The Connected Screening software calculates the effect on ventilation, humidity transfer, energy savings and transmission of light and outgoing longwave radiation based on the Svensson screen characteristics and position. With this accurate data, growers can achieve more screening hours without risking high humidity levels below fully closed screens. This allows growers to achieve a homogeneous climate, higher crop yields and up to 20% extra energy savings. Data is presented at a glance via a custom-made visualization.

Thanks to knowledge exchange and innovation, Connected Screening allows all the benefits of the Plant Empowerment. The result: healthier crops with higher yields needing less energy input.
