Turkey: Prisoners in Bursa start production in a greenhouse

Inmates in Bursa prison have started production in a greenhouse which was built with the support of the Bursa Chamber of Commerce. Bursa Chamber of Commerce Chairman Ozer Matli: “This project is carried out by the Ministry of Justice and contributes significantly to the community and to the local economy.”

The goal of the project is to teach prisoners about greenhouse production so they can start their own companies once they are released. Currently, the production takes place on an acreage of 0.7 hectares. So far prisoners have grown tomatoes, cucumber and green pepper, and the production has been completely organic. Some other prisons are also following this example and start to develop programs to teach prisoners about agricultural production and other crafts as a preparation for their lives after release.
