Mosaic virus throws a spanner in cucumber supply

Since May 7th, Royal ZON has been without cucumbers. The only supplying grower was forced to bring forward his crop rotation due to contamination with the cucumber mosaic virus, says product manager Vincent Theelen of ZON. It is expected that there will be cucumbers again from week 21.

The intention was that the high-wire grower would not do the crop rotation until July. Because the other grower who supplies to ZON is not yet in production, there is now a gap. A second grower only comes into production in the summer.

"We usually have sufficient cucumber supply, but in recent years you do see that virus problems are making it increasingly difficult for growers. That is why we will also actively look for additional supplying growers to prevent situations such as the present."

Lackluster prices
The prices on the market are bad at the moment, according to Vincent. "The weather is currently not favorable for cucumber consumption, so that is reflected in the prices."
