French cucumber: not a promising market

Cucumbers from the south of France will arrive in about two weeks. “At the moment, we do not have a lot of products to offer yet. This being said, the market is very competitive, and the French cucumber prices are not very profitable for the production,” explains Bruno Sangerma of Saveurs des Clos. The company is based in Ille-sur-Têt, near Perpignan.

“On the one hand, we are competing with other producing areas in France. The eastern part of the country, the region of Orléans and the Loire Valley are in full production of spring cucumbers. On the other hand, we are competing with the northern countries, especially the Netherlands,” adds Bruno. “This large production coincides with a market that is not promising at all. For 2 weeks now, the weather in France is not favorable for the consumption of cucumbers.”

In the coming weeks, the production in the south will increase to reach its peak between mid-May and mid-August. “We are expecting big volumes, but we do not have many opportunities to export our cucumbers,” explains Bruno. “Because of our geographical location, we serve very few markets, like Germany and England. The French producers of Nantes, Orléans and the eastern regions are closer to the consumption season.”
