Fluctuating quotations for strawberries

Antonio Benzi, wholesaler at the Rimini market and producer from Cesena (FC) reports that "there are very few Spanish strawberries on our market as all wholesalers prefer Italian ones. But prices fluctuate due to the weather and availability."

Benzi explains that, over the past few days, high-quality strawberries from southern Italy were paid €3.30-3.50/kg, while average varieties were paid around one Euro less.

"The fluctuating temperatures do not help as they do not favor consumption. I believe those who want to focus on quality should always promote the Italian produce and not only care about prices."

Benzi is also an important producer growing 500 thousand plants this year, 30% of which are protected crops. "We started harvesting in late March and, over the next few days, we will have more considerable quantities of local produce. The first variety we harvested was Sibilla, obtained by early plugs. Last week's wind took off the roof of a few greenhouses: 10% of the total so luckily nothing major."
