Italy: "Cucumber is not a widespread crop here"

Giuseppe Venezia is the production manager of the Venezia company guided by his son Stefano, with offices close to the shore, in Sicily. He said that “even though the cucumber is not a widespread crop here, its farming is well established in south-western Sicily. This product allows companies diversifying their revenue because there is not much of it”.

Here, the soil conditions are extremely favourable for vegetable farming, which can be greatly improved and promoted if the company carrying it out can count on strong expertise.

Snack cucumber is very appreciated by international customers

Venezia continued, “Cucumber production was born more than forty years ago. This produce has allowed our company to be a landmark in this market segment. We are one of the few companies farming cucumbers, and therefore we can be satisfied in terms of income. We also farm a variety called ‘mini-cucumber’, which is much appreciated by international markets. Thanks to some marketing advice we received, we expect to increase our production by next year”.

The mini-cucumber

The Stefano Venezia farming company occupies 2.5 hectares. Other than the cucumber, Stefano Venezia produces small berry table tomatoes (1 hectare) such as the cherry and the mini-plum varieties. The farming is carried out through two cycles over the course of the agricultural season.

The campaign manager explained, “We farm with the conventional agriculture method. However, we take extreme care for residuals, thus we reduce to the minimum the use of phytosanitary products. At the same time, we consider extremely important waste disposal, with regard to both the vegetal waste and the plastic materials utilised for the structure management. We strongly believe that environmental sustainability is a key aspect for the socio-economic and cultural development, as they both imply the respect for the territory”.
