Tomato production stopped migration from this Turkish town

The production volume of greenhouse tomatoes in Cameli town of Denizli has increased significantly over the last 2 years after the formation of the Agricultural Consultancy Office. The number of greenhouse tomato growers in the town increased from 8 to 140 as a result. Cameli tomatoes are sold to the domestic market and to European and Arabic countries.

All these developments have stopped the migration from the town by creating economic activity and jobs in the area.

Agricultural Consultancy Office was established with the help of the Cameli municipality and the office conducted a research to identify the most suitable product and variety for the conditions in the city. This research singled out “Cameli” tomato as the best variety to grow and afterwards the office started working hard with the growers in the area to encourage them to start greenhouse tomato production of this particular variety. Within just 2 years, the number of greenhouse tomato growers increased to 140 from 8 and annual tomato production in the town has increased to 20,000 tons.

The office is planning to expand the production areas and consequently increase the annual production to 40,000 tons. Many residents in the town are encouraged by the results and even some housewives have started to set up their own greenhouses for tomato production.
