Turkish tomato growers expect high demand in December from export markets

Greenhouse Investors and Manufacturers Association (SERA-BIR) Chairman Muslum Yanmaz: “Tomato growers are looking forward to the month of December. There are almost no tomatoes in the global market from mid-November to April and Turkish growers have a big competitive advantage in that regard as we will become the main source of supply for tomatoes during this 5-month period.

The restrictions to trade with Russia have been already lifted which contributed to the increase in exports and tomato has been one of our country’s main export products. The tomatoes from Azerbaijan is about to be finished for the season which was mostly sold to Russia. Our growers will enter into that area. The harvest of greenhouse tomatoes has started. Currently the price in the local market is around 0.70 USD per kg. This is good news for consumers as the price has dropped significantly in domestic market.

Tomatoes are grown in 3,500 hectares of greenhouses in Turkey between the months of November and April. We are aiming for tomato exports around 300 million USD for winter tomatoes.”
