Globe Plant Vierpolders sees acreage grow to 12 hectares

"Demand for grafted pepper plants for season 2018 - 2019 has grown strongly again"

Globe Plant has been a big player for quite some time when it comes to grafting vegetable plants. Besides tomato, cucumber and zucchini, also pepper has been added in recent years.

Grafting is done to pursue production growth, but also to reduce disease pressure. Grafting of peppers is picking up in an ever increasing speed. Two years ago, 8 hectares of grafted peppers were cultivated in the Netherlands. That has now grown to 12 hectares.

It makes sense to order these specific plants at Globe Plant, since pepper plants have been grafted for various soil cultivations for years in Vierpolders. After a few tests in recent years, there are now more companies that have made the step to grafted pepper plants for stone wool cultivation. Those grafted peppers are these days delivered to the growers.

Johan Grootscholten explains: "It is currently very busy at the company with the delivering of the plants. Our customers have opted for several main varieties and also different types of rootstocks are tested."

The grafting of peppers is done in the same way as tomato grafting. The grafting process is more time consuming with peppers because it needs much more care. Cultivation specialist Thijs explains: "The propagation of grafted pepper plants is a specialty. It is not comparable with the propagation of grafted tomato or non-grafted pepper plants. The growing period is also longer. Technically, the cultivation went really well here. The upper and lower stem grew well and quickly together. The result is good. I am proud of the beautiful plants that are now being delivered."

Also for the pepper grower, cultivation is different with grafted plants. That is why they have chosen to plant an entire section with grafted plants. The control of that section can then at least be adjusted.

Soon the plants of Globe Plant will be planted at the growers. In a while there will be the possibility to exchange cultivation experience at the site. By appointment the growth and production of the plants can then be seen and discussed.
