Turkey: "Growing dragon fruit is solution to labor problem"

Huseyin Uzer, a grower in Antalya has decided to grow dragon fruit instead of tomato and pepper after noticing how low his profitability is. Despite the protests from his family members, he transformed his greenhouse and started to grow dragon fruit.

The grower has only invested 5,000 USD to start with the production and underlines how little the costs are to grow dragon fruit as it only requires limited amount of water and does not require heating or cooling due to its heat resistant nature.

The grower is hoping to break even in this first season of the production and looking to expand his production and increase his profits in the upcoming years. He also added that even 1 person can oversee 1 hectare of dragon fruit production which brings more cost benefits in terms of labor costs. The price of dragon fruit is also very high at 3 USD per kg.
