According to German Perez, a representative of exporters, international sales of okra cultivated in the southern zone of Honduras will generate 45 million dollars, with the expansion to new markets of the European Union (EU).
"The main markets are the United States and Canada, but sales to different European countries, where it has had a good acceptance, such as France, England, and the Netherlands, have increased," the source said.
Currently the American okra is cultivated in 1,046 hectares, and the planting works for export benefits the rural area with 4,500 direct jobs, as each hectare requires four workers.
The investment per hectare, according to German Perez, is about 150 thousand lempiras. The activity of sowing and harvesting lasts 10 months and is a very important economic activity in the southern area, he added.
Up until last August, legumes and vegetables sales generated 69.6 million dollars, 5.1 percent ($ 3.4 million) more than in the same period of 2017; mainly due to a 5.8 percent increase in volume.
