Japan: Education center expands with 1 ha tomato production greenhouse

JFE Engineering Corporation has received an order for a climate-controlled tomato cultivation facility (using Priva technology) as a turnkey project from Tomatopark. This is the second turnkey order for plant construction for JFE Engineering’s Smart Agriculture Division.

Tomatopark was established by Seiwa in August 2017 for purposes of education and training of next-generation tomato farmers, and research and testing of tomato cultivation technology. In order to begin a full-scale tomato production business utilizing the know-how gained in the testing and research project, Seiwa decided recently to construct a new cultivation facility capable of high quality, high yield cultivation.

The area under cultivation in the new facility will be 1.0 ha, and annual production of beef tomatoes is projected at 500 tons.

Since JFE Engineering entered the Smart Agriculture business in September 2013, it has produced tomatoes at plants in Tomakomai and Sapporo in Hokkaido using the same type of climate-controlled plant factory as in the present order. Based on the production plant technology and cultivation technology accumulated there, the company has developed engineering proposals for agricultural projects in Japan and overseas. In November 2017, the company completed a plant, which is continuing to operate smoothly, in Niigata Prefecture.
