China: Workshop on agricultural policies and food security held in Beijing
Highlighting agricultural trade policies and food security, the Workshop focused on four topics, specifically, challenges and opportunities for enhancing food security, multilateral trading system and food security, implications for the sustainability of the agro-food system in China and implications and scenarios for China's agricultural supply-side reforms. Participants had an extensive and in-depth discussion on food security in perspectives of global food demand and supply, role of multilateral system, experience sharing and agricultural supply-side reform in China.
Experts from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) highlighted the long-term trends in global food and agriculture, the impact of revolving agricultural market on multilateral reform and food security, and the mid-term impact of agricultural policy reform in China. Experts from the International Center for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) underscored the roles of multilateral trade negotiations in ensuring food security at present and in the future. Presentations from domestic experts focused on the agricultural supply-side reform and options for agricultural policies in China.
The Workshop was jointly organized by the Agricultural Trade Promotion Center of MOA (ATPC), OECD, FAO and ICTSD. Over 100 participants attended the Workshop, including representatives from the OECD, FAO and ICTSD, diplomats from 22 embassies to China, officials from the MOA, Ministry of Commerce and the National Development and Reform Commission, scholars from the Development Research Center of the State Council of China, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Peking University and China Agricultural University, and representatives from related associations.
