CAN (AB): Food labelling for local markets

The Food Labelling for Local Markets workshop takes place on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at the Agriculture Centre (97 East Lake Ramp NE) in Airdrie, and on Thursday, April 13, 2017, at the Agri-Food Business Centre (6547 Sparrow Drive) in Leduc.

“Most foods in Canada must be labelled by law,” says Karen Goad, farm direct marketing specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, Grande Prairie. “This workshop will guide participants through the basic food labelling requirements and how they apply to farm direct marketed food products. It will also outline the new labelling requirements and proposed legislative changes.”

The workshop is targeted at producers and processors who sell food products direct to consumers through farmers’ markets, on-farm stores, CSAs, and other direct-to-consumer market channels.

“Participants will learn how to meet regulations while promoting their products, protect their business and customers from undeclared food allergens, and demystify food labelling information,” says Goad. “The workshop will help them to reduce the risk of food recalls, minimize potential business losses, and add value for their customers from field to market.”

Following the interactive half-day workshop, there will be one-on-one food label coaching. “Sign up for the coaching when you register or at the workshop,” says Goad. “Bring your existing or proposed food label to be reviewed. Each consultation is 15 minutes maximum with a limit of three labels per business being reviewed.”

Workshop presentations run from 9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. with one-on-one consultations from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. There is no cost for the workshop but advance registration is required. Lunch is not provided. The registration deadline is April 6, 2017 but register early as space is limited.
