Australia: Aquaponics farm gives prison inmates a sense of purpose
Located 27 kilometres west of Mount Barker along the Muir Highway, Pardelup prison is the oldest outpost in the Western Australian prison system.
It is a working farm that sits on grounds covering over 6,000 acres and holds up to 84 inmates.
With fewer than five years remaining on their sentences they have all requested to be there and are working on practical rehabilitation to ensure a smooth transition to life on the outside.
In recent months the prison has been the first in the state to trial a new industry — aquaponics.
Business manager at the prison, Bob Douglas, said the nine-month trial had been successful enough for the corrective services department to consider rolling the practice out at other prisons.
