Spain: New company joins PGI Tomate La Cañada

The Almeria-based company Luis Andújar has joined the Protected Geographical Indication Tomate La Cañada, which is the only one for this product that exists in Spain and one of the only two in Europe, as well as being the one with the most production on the continent.

In the company of the president of the company, Luis Andújar, the president of the PGI tomato La Cañada, Francisco López Martínez, has signed the document certifying its membership to the regulatory council and, therefore, its incorporation as a full member of the PGI, for which the company has had to undergo some mandatory inspections of its products, processes and facilities.

Luis Andújar is a company whose origins go back to the 90's, in the region of the Vega de Almería, where it set up its own farms and managed the progressive growth of all the necessary facilities for the production and marketing of tomatoes. Nowadays, its range includes numerous varieties, including cocktail on the vine, cherry pear on the vine or ox heart, all grown in modern production facilities and multitunnel greenhouses and handled at its own warehouse.

Its president, Luis Andújar, said that "our joining the PGI tomato La Cañada is due to a desire to continue growing, innovating and working on our brand and our commercial image, but also to the need to collaborate on a project for Almeria as a whole and get its products, and specifically those under the umbrella of the PGI, to gain the reputation they deserve. All Almeria-based companies growing tomatoes must agree on the development of joint strategies so that the whole world can become familiar with the unique features of our tomatoes; and without a doubt, this Tomate La Cañada project is a great way to achieve it."

For his part, the president of the regulatory council, Francisco López Martínez, described the new member of the PGI Tomate La Cañada as "a company that perfectly represents Almeria's agriculture, with strong values related to quality, innovation, service and reliability. The PGI Tomate La Cañada is opening its doors to this modern, innovative and clearly Almeria-oriented company with great pride and we hope other companies will soon follow."
