China: Vegetables more expensive

Data from the Shandong Commercial Affairs website show that the hot weather and continuing rain are seriously affecting the growth of vegetables. The market supply is dropping and the price of some monitored vegetable varieties are steadily rising.

Last week a focus survey was performed of 13 large species and 73 varieties. In total the price of 127 of the most important vegetables were monitored. In the wholesale chain, 37 of 61 varieties went up in price. 10 vegetables went down and 14 remained stable in price. In the retail chain, 40 of 66 vegetable varieties became more expensive, whereas 26 varieties are now cheaper. The frequent rain last week, in combination with high temperatures, has had a big effect on the growth of the locally produced vegetables. The supply remains tight, and costs are rising. Moreover, customers from within and from outside the province are buying larger quantities. This pushes the prices up even further.
