Emanuel Uzueta, Grupo Premier:

"Mexican tomatoes are good all year round"

Grupo Premier distributes fruit and vegetables to the Mexican domestic market. Its main product is tomatoes, but it also works with onions, cucumbers, chillies, papayas, apples, grapes and peaches, depending on the season.

Of these products, the season is currently underway for tomatoes, papayas, onions and chillies. "Tomatoes are good all year round, just like papayas," explains Emanuel Uzueta, of Grupo Premier. The trader has good prospects for tomatoes before the end of the year. "The season is stable. We have had a good year and expect to meet the annual target."

Some Mexican companies export to the United States and Europe, but Grupo Premier is an intermediary that sells products in the domestic market, where Uzueta acknowledges that there is plenty of competition.

The trader adds that El NiƱo has taken a big toll on producers, but the company is facing it with prevention. "We bought in advance. We deal with perishable products that cannot be stored for a long time, but we have tried storing a bit more than we would normally do, just to be safe. For example, we bought in another Mexican state, when we would normally just try to buy in our own state," he concludes.
