China: Sales of Dutch peppers meet expectations

The two week period for trial export of Dutch bell peppers ended at the end of July. Sales started thereafter. "In the last two to three weeks we have continuously had feedback from the customers. The degree of contact of the Chinese consumers with Dutch bell peppers is still limited. This is mainly explained by two facts. Firstly, since the peppers have only recently entered the Chinese market, Chinese consumers haven't had the opportunity yet to fully realise the difference between Chinese and imported peppers. Secondly, the Dutch sweet peppers are cultivated in glass a greenhouse and they are transported by airfreight after the harvest. The cost is therefore higher than that of Chinese peppers. The Chinese target market is the high-end retail supermarkets," says Ms. Jenny from the Chinese marketing branch of the Greenery.

Concerning this round of trial export, the result was within everyone's expectations. "The two varieties for this round of trial export were round peppers and long peppers. These peppers are produced in large quantities in China as well. The Dutch sweet mini peppers are definitely not in the scope of trial export. The Greenery will exhibit all of its pepper varieties at Asia Fruit Logistica in Hong Kong next month. Interested parties can come and have a look to get a fuller understanding of Dutch peppers."

During Asia Fruit Logistica, the 2016 harvest season of Dutch pears also starts. The Dutch pears were formally exported to the Chinese market in 2015. Now they are at the beginning of the third export season. The main pear varieties that are exported to China are the Conference pear, Sweet Sensation and Dazzling Gold. The Greenery is also the only company that exports the Sweet Sensation variety. "At the Hong Kong this year, we will promote all of our pear varieties. Although the Chinese market is not fully ripe for the Dutch pears, we have a strong faith in the market prospects. First of all, the Dutch pears are very juicy and tasty. Young and old can eat them. Second, there is no comparable pear variety present in the Chinese market. So Dutch pears still have an undeniable competitive advantage on the market."
