Korean growers find preventative solutions against CGMMV

Korean crop protection and fertilizer manufacturer JungWan B-F has developed a new preventative, anti spread agent against the Cucumber Green Mottle Mosaic Virus (CGMMV) in greenhouse watermelon production.

Do H. Kim of JungWan explained that they ran a series of intensive trials before they introduced their product on the market. "It is hard to develop a fully efficient treatment to fight the CGMMV, but we have succeeded to develop a product that is able to at least prevent the spreading of the virus. This helps growers to continue their crop, even after other plants have already been infected with the virus."

During the trials at commercial growers, WanJung B-F's preventative agent was applied in a field of melons where the CGMMV infection was confirmed. After four days the treatment was repeated and applied for a second time. At this time, the growers confirmed symptom relief. Three days later the growers confirmed seeing growth and development of the crops around the infected plants and 11 days later they noticed developments of normal fruits.

"It's great to see that we now have a solution available that helps counteract spreading of the virus", said Do H. Kim. "We still have a long way to go until we find a solution to obtain a permanent relief of the virus, but this is already a good step into the right direction.
