Finland: Successful colorization of red lettuce varieties with right quality of light
Different wavelengths of light launch many types of processes in plants. Plant colours are pigments, which are part of the defence mechanism against uv-radiation. In northern regions like Finland, the midwinter accumulation of sunlight (including blue light) is so low, that thorough lettuce colorization becomes problematic and red colours are almost totally lacking from the plants.
Led fixtures produce blue wavelengths, that strongly activate pigmentation mechanism in plants. Also red varieties will get beautiful colours when the light has enough blue in it, even during the darkest periods. Led fixtures that are developed for the Central European daylight environment contain less blue light, because there is enough sunlight available also in the midwinter. This is why Netled has product ranges for customers located both in northern and other regions. Hybrid lighting fixtures produce enough blue wavelengths even for northern region demanding midwinter daylight environment.
