Coached internships available for young greenhouse horticulture professionals

Over the last few years DLV GreenQ has coached several young professionals entering the world of greenhouse horticulture. Greenhouse owners are looking to the future and are willing to invest in their own personnel to ensure the knowledge level of their future growers is up to speed. DLV GreenQ offers a coaching route where young professionals learn greenhouse horticulture in a long term internship like training period.

Participation to standardized courses of DLV GreenQ

The Netherlands is known to be leading in knowledge and technology in the protected horticulture worldwide. No wonder all our trainees for coached traineeship come from abroad to benefit from the Dutch expertise and know-how.

Why coached internships?

Graduates of universities often have excellent theoretical knowledge but fail to bring this to a practical level. Especially if their education is different from horticulture an thorough introduction in and development of practical skills in a crop is useful. On the other hand some future staff members may not be willing to study the theory, yet need to learn about management of a nursery.

The training can be on the specific crop of the company, where a deep knowledge of all related fields for this crop is available. Think for instance of crop management, climate and irrigation, fertilization, labour management, marketing and postharvest.

What is the approach?

The main focus for a multi month coached internship period is to ensure practical knowledge development combined with theoretical training by form of participation to the standardized courses of DLV GreenQ. Each individual will be working in a greenhouse as the core job during the internship period. Each week they will meet a DLV GreenQ expert who will evaluate the progress, explain theory and answer questions.

Individual guidance from Dutch growers

This approach has proven to be a success for several different individuals from across the globe. For example, a manager from an African country has seen his future farm manager grow in the sector and his practical know-how has been improvement.

Specially for future managers it is safe to do this at a different than your own company where making mistakes or asking questions is not judged. At different companies also different management styles can be felt. This leads to development of an own style, fit for the company the trainee will work later on.

The coaching of DLV GreenQ varies from lecturing on different topics to reflection on the process. The reflection focusses on development of management qualifications, as wide as from personality to how to use gained knowledge ‘at home’.
