Open Days, Holland:

Syngenta expects much from new rootstock Kardia and Belido snacktomato

Syngenta presented its range of existing and new tomato varieties at the open days in Holland last week.

This year Syngenta focused on their cherry vine tomato: Belido. Syngenta's Frank van Antwerpen calls Belido their improvement in the current range through more resistance, combined with a superior taste and higher production rate. Expectations are high.

Syngenta conducted consumer surveys in the Market Hall in Rotterdam. Belido was compared to the current standard tomato in this segment. "In terms of flavor and presentation Belido came out as the winner," said Frank.

Besides the tomato varieties, Syngenta presented the new rootstock Kardia. With its uniformity and strong vigor this rootstock has achieved good results. This variety is more generative than the standard variety. Last year Kardia was sold for 50 ha. Kardia is the best fit with the more vegetative crops. Rik Lootens: "But beware, the choice of rootstock remains personal."
