Canada: Rock Garden Café wins OGVG Local Food Week competition

The Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers (OGVG) are pleased to announce that the Rock Café managed by Marek Hospitality Inc. at the Health Sciences North location in Sudbury, has been selected as the winner of the 2nd OGVG Local Food Week promotion and display competition held the 1st week of June 2015. Marek Hospitality Inc. maintains a commitment to support local agriculture whenever possible, and they embraced the opportunity to participate in our annual competition.

OGVG engaged over 85 hospitals and business dining locations throughout Ontario, providing tool kits consisting of promotional ideas, recipes and merchandising material. These resources were created to support launching cafeteria/cafe menu initiatives, promotions and displays during Local Food Week.

Working with OGVG resources, Stewart Brown, Retail Foodservice Director and his lead, Susan Haddow, spearheaded multiple OGVG promotions, menu specials and displays throughout their operation. Cross merchandising was implemented, whereby OGVG was featured at six key food stations in the cafe: Chef’s Table, Pasta/Stir Fry Station, Deli Station, Pizza Station, Salad Bar and Fresh & Fast. To further engage and educate customers, 3 separate OGVG displays were also set up throughout the week.

“OGVG has been pleased to be part of this promotion with Ontario hospitals and business dining cafeterias and we look forward to working with other foodservice partners in the future,” said Don Taylor, Chair of OGVG. “In a competitive market, these new partnerships that expand and support our produce in the foodservice marketplace will help sustain Ontario greenhouse vegetable farmers.”
