Canada: CFIA looking for comments on a new standard for the greenhouse nursery and floriculture sector

CFIA have engaged in a process to develop a voluntary standard that aims to create a framework for a consistent approach to controlling plant pests in the greenhouse, nursery and floriculture sectors. Please note: this is not a new regulation in development, it is a collection of considerations prepared to help growers manage pests in their greenhouses.

The standard provides guidance on several items including:
  • biosecurity, including prevention and integrated pest management;
  • promote a nationally consistent approach to mitigating pest risks with clear guidelines for effective biosecurity;
  • enhance industry's knowledge of the risks associated with pests; and
  • help identify potential gaps in current biosecurity measures.
CFIA have released the draft standard for public consultation and are encouraging flower growers to review the document and provide feedback.
