In the vine segment, Bayer launched the NUN 09097 and it was immediately apparent on entering the site that this variety can differentiate itself by its strong green sections - a topic that is becoming increasingly important in the tomato sector. "Certainly in this time of cultivation under lights, with 1/3 of the production still to go, this will be a problem. You can see that it keeps very well, after ten and after seventeen days of storage," says Sebastiaan Breugem of Bayer CropScience Vegetable Seeds. In the demo glasshouse, the variety is above all showing a higher production than the standard variety and also a slightly higher fruit weight. Up to and including week 26, the harvest from under the lights is 52.7kg with a fruit weight of 110-120g.
Production records with large tomatoes
Equally as striking is the introduction of NUN 09094 in the large vine segment. "With the emphasis on large," shows Breugem. In the Trial Centre, variety 09094 reaches an average fruit weight of 187g. "There is still some variation in relation to plant density - but it is a strong tomato."
Despite the fact that the variety scores well in taste and shelf-life tests, in this segment the production figures are the most important. That is where this variety excels, according to the hybridizers: early production and ultimately a higher production than than the standard variety. The cumulative production up to and including week 27 currently stands at 27.8, whereas the standard variety in the demo glasshouse currently stands at 22.8. "NUN 09094 is now out at various growers and the sellers at Bayer are expecting a really good season to come. Within a few weeks, the commercial name of both NUN09094 and NUN 09097 will be announced.
