Netherlands: Peonies auctioned for more than 1 euro per stem

The peony made its comeback for the first time this year, earlier this month the flowers were auctioned in Aalsmeer, and now they also appear in Naaldwijk.

"It's a niche market and the demand is still limited," says Alfred Winkelaar, auctioneer at FloraHolland, "but demand is certain to increase. It can start anytime now, especially as the days are getting warmer."

Excellent quality
Winkelaar is enthusiastic about the quality of the flowers, most of which stem from Israel. The prices were good: the first Sara Bernard stems going for more than €1 per stem. The first Duchesse de Nemours peonies were auctioned for similar prices.

Spring
Most peonies are grown outside, which means that warmer spring weather is required before the buds come to fruition. The peony is a very seasonal product and is popular because of its voluminous flowers.
