Rainbow Colors:

Full-scale LED installation at Dutch tulip grower

Located in Holland, Rainbow Colors is a modern, automated grower that produces more than 47 million tulips each year. At Rainbow Colors, performance and flexibility are crucial – as is maintaining stable two-layer cultivation in winter. The company was looking for a high-quality dynamic system with a focus on light efficiency and the possibility to provide each tulip variety with a different type of light, thus allowing Rainbow Colors to meet specific customer needs.

After careful consideration, Bas Karsten, CEO of Rainbow Colors, decided to go with the FL300 LED System from Fionia Lighting in Denmark. "The FL300 Grow offers light efficiency and controllability, as well as cost-effectiveness" – three factors that Karsten put first in his search for the optimal system.

Optimal control

The FL300 standard fixture is now installed throughout the entire greenhouse, and every tulip at Rainbow Colors is grown with the LED system. For optimal light control, the FL300 system is combined with the LCC4 climate control system, which not only monitors all greenhouse parameters but also controls the various light recipes as well as the light level.

Initial system trials revealed a unique advantage: the ability to provide each tulip variety with customized light recipes. Some tulips required stretching, while others needed colour enhancing, and the FL300 Grow and LCC4 combination has proved itself up to the task.

Bas Karsten, CEO at Rainbow Colors, states:

“After evaluating different LED manufacturers we chose the FL300 LED system from Fionia Lighting. It won on three parameters: Price, light efficiency and the possibility to control the light.”

Background

Fionia Lighting has researched and tested the application of LEDs for horticultural practice with success since 2005 and is one of the pioneers in this field. Research fields ranging from basic photosynthesis to advanced light guide control enable Fionia Lighting to combine many advanced elements into a new state of the art air-cooled LED top-light fixture.

The Fionia Lighting products are currently used with some of the world’s largest greenhouse growers, and are also used in research facilities, universities and grower educational centers. The combination of active cooling and lens system for the horticultural industry is patented by Fionia Lighting.
Fionia Lighting is a part of Senmatic A/S DGT, who produces and distributes the FL300 LED fixtures.
