Mexico: Prime Harvest relies on screens to reduce light intensity only when necessary

Located in the Agropark in Querétaro, México, Prime Harvest is a company that seeks to overcome any challenges they are faced with, which is why it’s no surprise that the company is the first double-layer plastic greenhouse located in the Agropark. Prime Harvest opted for the production of several varieties of peppers knowing ahead of time the risks this implied but also knowing the high possibility for a quick recovery on the return on investment.

The high-tech greenhouse is operated under the supervision of Grower, Noé Villalobos. For Prime Harvest the idea of investing in a screen came with multiple advantages, including reducing the operational complexity and more specifically the costs associated with the labour and materials for whitewashing the cover—which the company says shortens the useful life of the plastic. “The screen is a necessary tool for managing and controlling the light intensity and even more so when it comes to managing the peppers.” notes Noé Villalobos.

“When covering a greenhouse that spans 6 hectares it’s critical that the process remain simple, which is one of the primary reasons we selected our Svensson screen, washing is complicated, you have to ensure it’s uniformly applied along the entire cover’s surface without leaving any traces of paint, which affects the crop quality. With our light diffusing Harmony screen we avoid these type of situations all together.”

“In the spring and summer we have days with high light intensity, low humidity and high temperatures, three factors which significantly affect the crop quality. Our HARMONY 4820 O screen allows us to lower the light intensity and increase the relative humidity, creating a more favourable climate for the crop while enhancing the plant growth”.

“Although we know our screen is designed for solar reflection, the energy savings we see on our gas bill in winter months when we extend the screen at night, is very well received by our investors”.

“In the mornings before opening the screen, I open the high windows gradually to level the temperature and avoid a gust of cold air on my crop”.

For Prime Harvest grower Noé Villalobos, the screen system is a tool that should be considered in the design of http://www.ludvigsvensson.coma greenhouse as well as the irrigation or heating systems.
