US (AR): Controlled Environment Agriculture for food production and environmental stewardship

The University of Arizona’s Controlled Environment Agriculture Center (CEAC) will be hosting their annual Hydroponic Greenhouse Tomato Production Intensive Course from January 4, 2014 to January 9, 2014 in Tucson, AZ. The course will have an emphasis on growing tomatoes hydroponically in a greenhouse and will be taught by hydroponic specialist Dr. Pat Rorabaugh with a special lecture from a legend in the world on Controlled Environment Agriculture, Dr. Merle Jensen. Students will receive a blend of classroom time and hands-on time in a hydroponic greenhouse in order to successfully grow tomatoes on their own.

The Tomato Intensive will begin the afternoon of Sunday, January 4 with a tour of the CEAC facilities and the first lecture introducing CEA and hydroponics. Throughout the week, students will receive over a dozen hours of training in a hydroponic greenhouse and over 30 hours of discussion and lecture in the classroom in order to effectively teach them to grow hydroponically in a greenhouse. The course will also feature a round table discussion with greenhouse engineers, where students can ask experts questions regarding their greenhouse design and operations. The course will conclude on Friday, January 9 with dinner and a lecture on the current state of CEA with Dr. Merle Jensen.

2014 Tomato Intensive student, Jared of Colorado, exclaimed that he “Got a year's worth of experience in a week.” Tomato Intensive attendees will receive educational and reading materials (via flash drive) of a full semester university course along with lectures, greenhouse time, and the opportunity to make connections with CEA experts. Come join us in Tucson for a great week of learning and enjoy the beautiful winter weather!
