ZON clock auctions focus on fresh, also in bad tomato market

In early April, ZON fruit & vegetables started strengthening the clock function. ZON concentrated day trading on the clock, which also resulted in the supply of a wider range. In order to further improve the functioning of the clock as a marketing tool, ZON recently announced that, where possible, it would adapt the auction times to those of the Belgian auctions.

Through a combination of high supply and falling demand due to the holidays, the market for on the vine tomatoes has become quite bad in recent weeks. "Such a situation leads to stock piling up," said Vincent Theelen, Business Unit Manager for tomatoes at ZON, adding that "even in the current market situation, and with a wide range of tomatoes, we continue focusing on fresh produce for the clock. If you inform your buyers that you have a daily range of fresh produce, then in our view the focus should be on fresh products, thereby preventing stock from piling up."
