Half of Ile-de-France's fruit, vegetable producers affected by hail storms

Ile-de-France was hit with hail storms twice over the last few days. Agriculture was seriously affected and the Chamber of Agriculture is reviewing the damage caused.

Many fruit and vegetable growers lost 100% of their harvest, and the worst off have up to €500,000 of damage. On Tuesday morning some had to lay off their employees for financial reasons. Tunnels, covers and greenhouses were ripped apart and are not insurable.

Half of the region's horticulturists were also affected, of which some greenhouses have been completely destroyed. Broken greenhouses have a serious affect on the damaged harvest.

Orchards were not spared - trees were de-rooted, leaves chopped up, and production tunnels punctured, creating serious damage.

The most affected field crops are barley, rapeseed, maize and potatoes with 30-80% damage.
