Spain: Eggplant prices tripled in the last week

The sudden drop in temperatures, has caused a considerable increase in the prices of the two products that are influenced the most by the weather, the zucchini and the eggplant.

Zucchini, which was being traded between 90 cents and 1.21 Euro per kilo on November 15 at the auction at Agroejido, spiked to record prices ranging between 2.08 Euro and 2.26 Euro per kilo on Thursday 21 from the same marketer. The drop in temperature caused a significant reduction in the production of this vegetable and, therefore, its price doubled.

Meanwhile, the eggplant registered the highest increases in prices. Specifically, this product has tripled in price as it was being sold between 27 and 40 cents per kilo in Agroejido, November 15, and was later sold between 1.06 and 1.28 Euro per kilogram.

Other products' prices, in the same period of time, also increased, they more than doubled. The Almeria cucumber variety, which was traded between 13 and 21 Euro cents per kilo was later being sold at about 50 cents.

Production will probably continue to decrease because of the destruction of the greenhouses by the downpour and hail storm that took place in the municipality of El Ejido on November 20, and, if the low temperatures continue, the price of products such as the zucchini and the cucumber will remain high and might even continue to increase.
