UK: Christmas poinsettias now in full bloom

The proud red flowers of a plant coupled with Christmas have started to come into full bloom at a Richmondshire nursery in the United Kingdom. Ravensworth Nurseries, near Richmond, has about 12,000 poinsettias ready to buy, of varying sizes, many of which have been growing since the summer.

Fiona Dean from the nursery said: “We grow the plants in three stages, and all from a mother plant so they get the nice red flowers.

“It is very difficult to get a poinsettia to go red again.

“The biggest plants now have around eight to 10 flowers and stand at 50cm, having grown from a single shoot around 10cm high.”

Ms Dean said the plants are popular every year because most people throw them out after each Christmas season.
